Customer Review: Great ‘all-around’ book
As an aromatherapist, I have many titles in my library of reference material. This book is one of the few that is unique. It is a great book for someone just starting to delve into aromatherapy, but it goes farther than that. You will find yourself going back to this book over and over and over again as you develop and hone your skills. I have been using essential oils for almost a decade, and I picked it up just the other day to look something up. When I grabbed it this week, it hit me just how good a book this really is. I decided I had to review it here so others could benefit from reading it as well. I hope this helps someone
Customer Review: Good start, but some criticisms
This has a lot of interesting explanations on how the oils mix, about synergistic blends. It is a great overview of aromatherapy.

However, I find the book to be a little bit too preachy. When the author wrote this book, did she consider the audience? Every other sentence explains about the toxicity and the poisons of our every day products. It’s a bit much. One doesn’t need to convert the choir. They are already converted, at least part way. One can do without such overt preachiness.

My second criticism is that the book is designed for a beginner. As a beginner, it seems to me that the recipes should be a little more basic. While in the beginning, she discusses the 10 essential oils that everyone should have in their basic care arsenal, the other recipes often go far beyond those 10. As a beginner, I have yet to acquire all of these costly oils, and then some. It would be helpful to have recipes that didn’t contain 6-10 different oils. An example would be: these two oils is a basic recipe for this, and if you really want to go further, add these as well. (There are a number of recipes like that, but they are far and few.) Also, it would be nice to know why one essential oil was chosen over another for a certain mixture. Is it for anti-inflammatory reasons? For general antiseptic? Anti fungal? One has to do a lot of guessing. This is supposed to be a beginners book, after all.

Customer Review: The Best Soaps Around!
I can’t say enough positive things about Plantlife soaps. I came to natural soaps for a very specific reason–a husband whose eczema was virtually out of control. For years, we’d tried keeping him on soaps designed for sensitive skin. While this would generally calm flare-ups slightly, it wouldn’t prevent them from creeping up again. Admittedly, since beginning to use Plantlife’s soaps, my husband is NOT eczema free… BUT his skin is drastically improved and his flare-ups are down to about 10% of what they once were. The scents of Plantlife’s soaps are remarkably pleasant too. I’ve yet to find one that is offensive to my nose–they’re delicately done, not over-powering or too “perfume-y.” So if you’re thinking of switching to herbal soaps to treat your skin to the best, most natural clean possible–try some Plantlife soaps. If you’re simply looking for some aromatherapy or some way to mix-up your usual soap routine–try some Plantlife soaps. I’d be willing to bet that if you returned to “normal,” store-bought soaps afterwards, you’d do so grudgingly and reluctantly!

Customer Review: Two months and still going strong
I’ve had this thing running pretty much constantly since I purchased it about 2 months ago. While I can’t attest to the humidifying capabilities (didn’t buy it for that), it DOES work nicely to fragrance the air while it’s running. If it’s close enough to you, you can feel a cool mist. I’ve used only distilled water. I buy a jug of it and pour a bunch of my favorite essential oil blend in and let it sit for a few days. Then I double-filter it (coffee filters) into another bottle so the mechanism doesn’t get clogged with oils (pour the filtered oil back into your jug of non-filtered scented water to continually intensify the fragrance). I’ve found that you shouldn’t fill quite up to the fill line as it causes the mist to “spurt” out. If you fill it up to just below, it works great and will mist for around 2 hours (not sure why another reviewer said only 1/2 hour). For the little over $20 that I paid, I feel that I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth. More expensive oil diffusers/nebulisers always clog and you have to end up replacing or refurbishing parts - I’ve tried them all.

Customer Review: Nice while it lasted. 6 weeks then died.
I was very please with the product and enjoyed the cool mist and fragrance. However about 6 weeks later it stopped working.It may have been caused by leaving water in the reservoir for a few days,I’m not sure. I may try another Spa mist design, because I did like what the product did.

Customer Review: Please Use Extreme Caution
I bought this book for myself. I read it over several times and became very familiar with the process before attempting anything. The book is extremely informative and well-written. Very easy to understand. The description of ingredients and the purpose of each one was very useful. Beautiful pictures. Nice sections on coloring, fragrancing & moulding. Great info. on where ingredients can be purchased. However, even though I followed the directions for the alcohol/lye method to the letter, I still had a disastrous first experience. My mixture, simmering on lowest possible heat, boiled up and oozed out the sides, despite the tightly cinched bungee holding the sheets of plastic in place. My inner pot ended up floating on boiling soap foam. I managed to save the remainder that was left in the pot and finished the simmering proccess directly on the burner (after cleaning the outside of the pot thoroughly). I estimated the amount of sugar/water solution and glycerin to add to it. Although I can’t vouch for the amounts of any of the ingredients at this point, the stuff that I did save managed to come out very well. Looks pretty, smells great and lathers beautifully. I’m just lucky my stove top didn’t burst into flames considering the flamable alcohol that oozed over the sides of the pot. I believe next time I try this (soon) I will ajust the method to what I consider safe and hope that it works well. If you plan on making this soap, please be sure to have an extinguisher close by. I’m not sure why I had such a horrible time with this method, but I’d hate for it to be worse for anyone else.
Customer Review: great gift idea
I recieved this book for a Christmas present from my brother-in-law. He knows I enjoy ‘crafting’ as he calls it. I personally wouldn’t have thought of making soaps as my next crafting project, but now that I’ve read this book I’m slowing compiling all the items I need(I’m on a tight budget currently), I can’t wait until I can start making my very own soaps. I’ve thanked my brother-in-law several times for his wonderful present, even though my husband is cringing at the thought of havnig piles of soap curing in our small apt. Everything is explained so well, I’m sure if my husband wanted to he could even make soaps too. This year everyone I know will be getting soap that I made, thanks to this book.

Customer Review: Smells great, even when not heated
I have used many heat wraps, especially those heated by microwaving… and this one smells great. I got hooked with Dreamtime products when I got a little kit from them that included a candle, spray, etc… but that was a smaller wrap than this one. Also, this wrap has little pockets that keep the grains evenly distributed along its length. Its cover is velvety soft and looks good, too…when left on the bed or couch after use.

If you haven’t tried a neck / body wrap before, then I highly recommend it. In essence these wraps can warm you up when you’re cool, cool you down when you’re warm, and snuggle against you at any other time. The wrap consists of an inner core that has quilted pockets of rice. The outer layer is a soft lavender velvet cloth. You can take out that inner core if you need to wash the outer area. You can microwave the inner core to warm it up, which makes an excellent muscle relaxant. This is *perfect* if you have a sore neck and shoulders and want to ease them. On the other hand if you have a headache or muscle cramp, you can plunk that inner core into the freezer to cool it down, and it works wonderfully in that way as well. When I put the wrap around my neck, first of all, it feels fantastic. It’s soft, snuggly, warm, and it really does warm you all up very quickly. Even better, though, when you roll your head back against the rice-grain-filled cloth, it feels fantastic. It’s very soothing, and you can just sit there for 5-10 minutes rolling your head from side to side and enjoying the sensation. I even love the aroma mix. There is primarily cloves and cinnamon, plus a hint of eycalyptus. It gives you a comfy, snuggly feeling. I imagine that over time the scent will fade away, but I suppose that is easy enough to fix with some spice jars. The texture of the wrap is just SO nice that I won’t mind at all refilling the scents if they fade. Highly recommended!

I would highly recommend this book. I attended one of Kathi’s workshops on using herbs and essential oils for first aid and she is a wonderful teacher. I subsequently bought her book (one of the many she has published) and have found them easy to read and very informative. I have made at least 10 of her essential oil recipes for myself, my friends and my family with terrific results. I recommend this book for both experienced aromatherapists and novices alike. It also makes an excellent gift!

The book is written so anyone can understand and use the information on a daily basis. It provides valuable information on prevention, healing yourself, and has helpful ideas. The pictures are clear and the directions are very easy to follow step by step. You can learn the important pressure points quickly. I have used the tehniques to travel 22 hours on a plane and did not get air sick, swollen limbs, or suffer from jet lag just from using a few pressure points and following the helpful hints. The herbal and aroma therapy is also very helpful for relaxation and improving health. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

Customer Review: Charming book
This is a charming book on aromatherapy, written in a conversational style. You can imagine sitting with a friend in a tea-shop where she is telling you how this or that essential oil helped so and so with such and such a problem. This makes book very easy to read and the stories make it easy to remember what essential oil may be helpful for treating particular issue. While the focus of the book is on essential oils which are helpful for issues related to women such as pms, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, it covers many issue related to both sexes, such as weight loss, skin care, hair care, sexually transmitted diseases and general ailments like headache, stomachache, infections, etc. At the end of the book there are about 16 pages with recipes related to issues mentioned previously in the book. This is a rather small book, perhaps more geared toward newcomers to aromatherapy, though the anecdotal stories make it for an informative and fun reading for anyone.
Customer Review: A wonderful guide… but not always to aromatherapy
This was one of my very first aromatherapy books, because it is relatively inexpensive, and likewise relatively small and non-threatening. It has more the feel of a friendly guide than some obscure textbook. I still use it on a very regular basis, even though I’ve also added a number of more advanced books to my repertoire. It is, on the whole, indeed very useful for women (and can be for men as well, of course!) It covers a wide range of women’s-interest subjects, from home and body care, to pregnancy and infants ailments. The information for men is not as prevalent (as indicated in the title, of course) but many things that apply to women apply to men as well. Most of the information is very thorough, but it can sometimes be hard to get to the ‘meat’ of what you are looking for. It is written in a very ‘friendly’, anecdotal style, which although easier reading than more ‘technical’ books, can make it difficult to find the key things you are looking for. The recommended essential oils are always in bold text, however, so that does at least partially negate this problem. Another issue I had with it was the fact that some of the subjects she speaks about, there is NO essential oil information at all. This would not trouble me nearly as much, except for the fact that part of the title of the book is ‘Guide to Essential Oils’. It is still good information, but if there is no essential oil information, I don’t feel it belongs in an essential oil guide. Despite these problems, however, I would definitely recommend it for any aromatherapy/essential oil library.

I’m brand spanking new to using aromatherapy. I decided to explore the subject because I realized I had a highly developed sense of smell and how it affected my life on the daily basis. After skimming through this book for a few days I was stricken with asthma due to seasonal changes. Having suffered from this condition all of my adult life, I know how hard it is to gain control of my breathing after numerous attacks. AFTER seeking medical attention to bring my condition under control I started using the deep breathing formulas for the diffusor. I was surprised by how quickly it penetrated. After a few days of bedrest and this formula, I was able to return to work and normal activities. Before I would be housebound for at least 10-14 days. I highly recommend this book and look forward to seeing what else it has to offer.

This is an easy-to-read, comprehensive guide for those wishing to learn about the various uses of essential oils, what they are, and what they cure. The last section of the book, where more extensive information is given about each essential oil (scent, uses, and cautions), is especially useful to “intermediates” who wish to begin creating their own recipes and blends. The only drawback is that some 70 oils are introduced and used in the recipes in the book, which means a beginner who wants to experiment with these recipes will have to spend an exorbitant amount of money to get started. I definitely recommend it for someone who knows a bit about oils and already has an EO inventory of their own.

The package for the oils said (1) Refreshing; (1) Soothing; and (1) Unscented. If only it were so! The refreshing and soothing oil fragrances are nice and light, and the oil is very nice to work with, but the unscented oil was somehow left out and we received the exotic oil instead. BLECK! “Exotic” means “reeks of patchouli.” I decided to go ahead and enjoy the two bottles I like rather than go through Amazon’s return process, but I paid for three bottles of oil and only received two I can use.

This is the best collection of information about hydrosols on the market! I make lotions and oils for dogs and cats so learning about hydrosols is critical. The author has easy to understand information about the history and process of making hydrosols. She includes concise information on specific scents and provides recipes for their use. I’m going to use this book on a regular basis. Customer Review: Definitive…a wonderful addition to my library
I purchased this book when it first came out. I thoroughly enjoyed it at that time, and have used it as a reference ever since. What so many do not realize is that different treatments (distillation vs. tincture vs. absolute vs. hydrosol, etc.) of a plant result in often VERY different properties comprising that substance. So finally having some insights into the properties of hydrosols, the water remaining from the distillation of a plant, is/was much needed. No other work like it had been available. And what a revelation about many of them. Most people, even those working with essential oils and their cousins were not aware of what this or that hydrosol might do, let alone how to get their hands on it. Really needed and really wonderful work!

I can’t say enough positive things about Plantlife soaps. I came to natural soaps for a very specific reason–a husband whose eczema was virtually out of control. For years, we’d tried keeping him on soaps designed for sensitive skin. While this would generally calm flare-ups slightly, it wouldn’t prevent them from creeping up again. Admittedly, since beginning to use Plantlife’s soaps, my husband is NOT eczema free… BUT his skin is drastically improved and his flare-ups are down to about 10% of what they once were. The scents of Plantlife’s soaps are remarkably pleasant too. I’ve yet to find one that is offensive to my nose–they’re delicately done, not over-powering or too “perfume-y.” So if you’re thinking of switching to herbal soaps to treat your skin to the best, most natural clean possible–try some Plantlife soaps. If you’re simply looking for some aromatherapy or some way to mix-up your usual soap routine–try some Plantlife soaps. I’d be willing to bet that if you returned to “normal,” store-bought soaps afterwards, you’d do so grudgingly and reluctantly!

As someone who has been actively involved in aromatherapy for almost ten years, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Lawless’ acclaimed book. Based on its title and description, I was expecting a true encyclopaedia - something like Worwood’s “Fragrant Pharmacy”, only more comprehensive and without specific recipes (I prefer it that way). It IS an “encyclopaedia”: it contains the descriptions of 190 + EO, probably the most you’ll ever see compiled in a single book. They are arranged by alphabetical order, and the entries include a detailed description of the plant & of the oil, its geographic distribution, etc. It also includes extensive botanical, chemical and safety data. They even include traditional uses of the plant from which the EO in question is extracted (which, BTW, is not at all necessary - or even particularly useful - information, since EO can be extracted from parts of plants different to those that are used in traditional medicine). All that information would be fine (if slightly superfluous) - if the data concerning the specific properties of the EO discussed had been more extensive. Of course Lawless duly lists all the actions (such as antipyretic, fungicidal, sedative, etc.) and “aromatherapy/home” uses. But the latter are listed in a “telegraphic” way that doesn’t really appear to make any distinctions between the specific benefits of each EO. Of course many oils have very similar effects. But “similar” does not equal “the same”. A typical “Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy/Home Use” rubric (in this case, for spikenard) looks like this: SKIN CARE: Allergies, inflammation, mature skin, rashes etc. NERVOUS SYSTEM: Insomnia, nervous indigestion, migraine, stress and tenson. OTHER USES: Little used these days, usually as substitute for valerian oil. First of all, what is meant by “etc.”? Those already familiar with the EO in question would know - but those who aren’t probably wouldn’t. In this particular case, BTW, the data also fail to mention the cardiotonic properties of the plant, which makes the OTHER USES rubric incomplete. (I, for one, use spikenard A LOT!) Surprisingly, the HERBAL/FOLK TRADITION also fails to mention its regenerative effect on hair colour. And this is just an example, picked at random. I am really, really not nit-picking, and I hope my writing doesn’t come across that way. I think Lawless’ book is an extremely useful primer - and, yes, an “encyclopaedia”, in a concise sort of way - that absolutely should find a place on the shelves of anyone interested in aromatherapy. There is no question about that. This book is 100% recommended. It is perfect as an introduction for beginners, and a very useful quick-reference book for those who already are experienced EO users. I just find that it has perhaps too many general (somewhat superfluous) data on the one hand, and too little (specific) information on the other. I think it would be a very good idea to extend the “Herbal/Folk Tradition” and “Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy/Home Use” rubrics, to include perhaps some more anecdotal information (duly labeled as such) and somewhat more elaborated indications for its specific uses. Then this book would truly become the unsurpassed treasure of aromatherapy data that it should be.
Customer Review: Recommended standard text for Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy education
This book is recommended or required reading for almost every aromatherapy educational course, home use workshop, or personal study bibliography I have ever seen produced by leaders in the aromatherapy field in the United States, Canada, or Great Britain. Application guidelines and chemistry overview are located at the front of the book. To throughly learn a subject, whether by reading or class work, more than one source of information is necessary. I recommend at least 4 different sources of information and 7 is better. This text should definately be one of the 4 for aromatherapy.

This is a great book for learning how to make any kind of herbal remedy, including medicinal wines/vinegars, salves, syrups, skin-care, you name it. They tell you what herbs work best for different health problems, and how to make special blends for immunity (which has always been a problem; I have two young sons, and I always get sick from them, plus I live in Michigan). I could go on and on about all the great stuff in this book, but you’ll just have to find out for yourself! I also like the fact that there aren’t a lot of exotic ingredients in the recipes; most of the herbs or other ingredients can be found at a health food store or grown in your garden. This book is a great bargain; I found it for less than $5.00 at a local bookstore, but I sure got my moneys worth!
