Customer Review: Good reference
While this is not the most comprehensive guide to essential oils it is a good and detailed book for the most common ones and some less common ones. I have had the book for over a year now and I have constantly referenced it.
Customer Review: Highly informative, well laid-out, but has some limitations
In this book Sellar has profiled 83 essential oils in quite a lot of depth, devoting two pages to each oil. After the usual list of names in English and Latin, extraction method and so forth, the categories listed are: aroma, features of the plant, history and myth, chemical constituents, properties, precautions, effects on mind, body, and skin, and good blending partners. This is pretty much the entire book, although there is a brief glossary at the end which runs along the following lines: Antidontalgic: Relieving toothache. Cajuput, Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Pimento. There are also a couple of charts showing blending families (citrus, herbs, spices and so on) and suggested oils for skin types. For someone who already has a basic working knowledge of aromatherapy, this is a very useful book, combining each of reference with impressive depth. I would not recommend it as the first book for a beginner, however. Sellar assumes that her readers already know how to use essential oils so does not provide any information on blending, carrier oils, methods of application, massage and so forth. In addition, the referencing tends to be one-way: it is much easier to look up an oil in this book than it is to look up a symptom. So if you want to find a good oil for, say, PMS, this book will be much harder to use if you do not already know that you should be looking at lavender, geranium, clary sage etc. The glossary at the end is of limited use and certainly does not constitute a materia medica. I find this book most useful when used in conjunction with other aromatherapy books, so that I can cross-reference, usually by looking up symptoms in other books and then turning to this one to find out more about the oils that have been suggested.

Practical Aromatherapy: How to Use Essential Oils to Restore Vitality
List Price: ?4.99
Used Price: ?0.01
Customer Review: An excellent introduction to aromatherapy
Shirley Price is internationally known as a leading aromatherapist, and has here produced a book which covers a great deal of ground in a relatively short space. She gives a general introduction to aromatherapy and its background, profiles 47 essential oils individually as well as providing a therapeutic index and some very sensible recipes for the commoner ailments, and provides a selection of case histories, both Price’s own and from her colleagues. The oil profiles and charts are clearly laid out and simple to follow; they are concise but still go into quite a bit of detail. Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy techniques, such as blending oils or using them in the bath, are explained well, and at all times her suggested practices and essential oil dilutions are practical and safe. Massage techniques (effleurage, p?trissage and frictions) are clearly explained and a whole-body massage sequence suggested, with good illustrations. There are also chapters on skin care and some other disciplines, namely reflexology and shiatsu. Again background and techniques are given a basic but thorough discussion, and routines given for those who wish to incorporate these other complementary therapies into their aromatherapy treatments. This was the first book I bought on aromatherapy and it kept me going for a long time. While those who go on to study aromatherapy seriously will, sooner or later, want books that discuss its various aspects in more depth, for an all-round introduction to the subject that will give you a good working amateur knowledge, this book is a great place to start.
Customer Review: Packed with information and recipes
I have several books on aromatherapy but found none as useful as this. It was my very first and I still use it more often than any of the more expensive books. It has very easy to follow charts showing compatability of oils to each other and to a particular ailment. I have tried many of the suggested recipes with great results - the oils for backache are extremely effective. Well worth the nominal amount asked for this book.

Customer Review: waste of money
This book does not seem to be written by a pro. The explanations of the different oils are lacking in depth and read like the material has been borrowed from others. The recipes are time consuming and ridiculous. Who is prepared to use extensive time (and several kitchen appliances) making a face wash that must be prepared daily before use? The recipes are constantly referred to as “also good to eat”. I’m wondering if this wasn’t written by a cook-turned-trendy-for-aromatherapy. Don’t waste your money on this book!
Customer Review: not satisfied
I think the author should eliminate the hard to find materials recipes. This way, maybe, the rest of us, can make beuty cookery while continuing our lives.

Customer Review: Buy it!
This book is excellent. Whether like me you are a professional, or just someone who is interested in Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy. Its well written, easy to understand & has some very good recipes. Highly Recommended.
Customer Review: Very useful
Like many books on aromatherapy, this one does not attempt to do everything. It is not a general beginners’ book which spends much of its time telling you what an essential oil is and how to put them in the bath; it does not go into detail on massage or chemistry. The first 50 pages cover such topics briefly, but the bulk of the book is devoted to profiles of individual essential oils and recipes for blends. The essential oil profiles are usually two pages long each. They list the botanical name, family, location of the plant, extraction method, colour and odour of the oil, and description of the plant. There is a little more detail on the history of the plant and oil, precautions if relevant, and then the properties are listed (e.g. Clary sage: Tonic, sedative, hypotensive, anti-convulsant and euphoric). The really useful part is where the uses are described. They are divided into body systems, e.g. circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, nervous, muscular, emotion (to continue using the Clary sage entry), and then listed as follows: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM - Relaxes spasms in asthma due to anxiety or other emotional tension. REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM - Very useful for treating PMS and period pains. Can also be beneficial for infertility. This is followed by a list of blends for each system, which is particularly useful if you want to make a certain oil the focus of your blend e.g. MUSCULAR clary sage 5 rosemary 4 coriander 4 The last section of the book is devoted to recipes. There are sections on baths; general massage blends; face and bodycare; first-aid and holidays; pregnancy, mother and baby; blends for men; and then by ailment, again classified by body system e.g. circulatory disorders, skin disorders, emotional problems. Most ailments will have several different blends suggested, and the recipes are usually for three essential oils per blend (as is standard in aromatherapy). The 60 oils discussed are the standard repertoire for home use, and are recommended with due regard for safety. The dilutions are sensible and the recipes are practical. The vast number of recipes included, and the simplicity of each one, means that even if you only have a small number of oils, there are bound to be recipes somewhere which include them. There is a glossary of medical terms at the end, suggested further reading and a good index. This is a good general-purpose book for blending oils. It is nicely laid-out, very easy to follow, and excellent for cross-referencing. It will be useful to the beginner and the professional alike.

Customer Review: Not as good as it could have been
If you have a basic knowledge (i.e read other books) of aromatherapy than this is NOT the book for you. I bought it expecting lots of tips on using oils to ease some of the more uncomfortable aspects of pregnancy but I was disappointed that this book is more of a “Basic Guide” to aromatherapy and didn’t really go into much depth in the pregnancy and childbirth bit. Still, it was helpful in stating which oils should not be used in pregnancy. Okay for people completely new to aromatherapy, but disappointing for the slightly more experienced.
Customer Review: Excellent Reference Book
I bought this book towards the end of my pregnancy and did wonder if it was going to be useful after I had my baby - it has proved to be an invaluable reference book. Clearly written and informative with an alphabetical list of ailments and the essential oils useful for them - I return to this book time and time again for myself and all my family.

Aromatherapy With Valerie Ann Worwood

Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy With Valerie Ann Worwood
While this video may be titled Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy, it’s as much about self-massage as it is about treating yourself with essential oils. Valerie Ann Worwood is an excellent guide to the benefits of aromatherapy–using scents to soothe and heal–for the whole family, and the sections on how to give yourself a massage are alone worth the price of this tape.

Worwood begins with the mixing of oils. The video sleeve contains a guide to which oils work for specific desired results (for instance, lemon oil is good for the body and soul, for use as a sedative, and for increasing concentration), and she mixes a few concoctions to illustrate. She then moves on to first aid, healing cuts and burns, stimulating aching feet, and helping a young child fall asleep. Next is aromatherapy in beauty regimes. The face massage is soothing, and she claims it will help release tension, increase circulation, improve texture, and revitalize the face. Scents in baths and showers follow, and then the section on stress, tension, and self-massage. The self-massage is demonstrated slowly enough that it’s easy to follow. Who needs a masseuse? With Worwood as a guide, you can calm the aching muscles of your shoulders, neck, arm, breasts, hip, back, and bottom all by your lonesome (note: there is a bit of nudity in the demonstration). She finishes the video with environmental perfuming–scenting your living space. Warning: after viewing this video you may go overboard on purchasing the oils. But at least you and your home will be pleasingly aromatized. –Jenny Brown

Customer Review: A great DVD to share with others.
Having purchased this DVD for my own enlightenment, I found it was something worth sharing with my sisters and friends, all of whom, like myself, have difficulty finding time for relaxation. So, this DVD will be their Christmas gift along with my own massage oil blends - both for face and body, and I am anxious to know what they think. In my opinion, this DVD conveys a sense of caring - through teaching one to take time for self in addition to the wonderful benefits of using essential oils in your home and everyday life. I am not an aromatherapist, nor a massage therapist, however I have been using essential oils to make my own bath and beauty products for some years and recently have begun doing face and self massage. This DVD was very helpful with the techniques of self massage. I do recommend that anyone interested is using essential oils first educate themselves as to which oils are right for them.

Ms. Worwood’s DVD ranks at the top of my list of beneficial information on aromatherapy and massage therapy (which go hand in hand) and should be enjoyed by anyone with interest in these topics.

Customer Review: Excellent!!!
This has to be the best aromtherapy DVD there is! I can’t begin to tell you how it has changed my life and understanding and knowledge of essential oils. The absolute best!

Customer Review: A clear and comprehensive aid to the therapeutic encounter
All Chrissie Wildwood’s books go well beyond a prescriptive ‘do-this-blend-for-this-condition’ approach. Her books have great integrity and seek to empower the reader by explaining reasons. Particularly helpful is the anatomy, physiology and pathology sections, looking at the structure and functions of different bodymind systems, and explaining the actions of suggested essential oils in context. Though this is reaally a book for the practitioner, rather than the keen amateur, the clarity and friendliness of her writing style mean that this is also a book which the home user might find extremely fascinating too

Customer Review: Making Natural Liquid Soaps: Herbal Shower Gels is a good reference book
This book not only explains the mechanics of how to make the soap but it also explains the chemistry in practical ways. This enables me to make up my own recopies to the amount I desire with the proper balance of lye to different kind of oils. It also has starter recipes for the beginners. In short, I think this book is great for the beginner and one who wants to begin to be more creative in their soap making.

Customer Review: You need this book!
This book is an essential for the beginner or more experienced aromatherapist alike. You will find lots of oils not generally listed else where and each has it’s data grouped under the headings; family, habitat and growth, scent, components (chemistry), properties, indications, use and contraindications (where applicable). There is a chapter on hydrosols which is, I find, totally an essential in todays world/work place. This is written in an easy to read format and is a pleasure to read! I thoroughly recommend it to all aromatherapy students as it will be invaluable for study.
Customer Review: You need this book!
This book is a Pandoras Box of delights! I expected the run-of-the-mill basics that most magickal herbals contain but, to my utter delight, I found treasure after treasure as each herb has ALL its attributes in one place! Under each herb is listed what God/Goddess, planet, religious, magickal, lore, usage and historical ‘data’ is attributed to it! I can’t put the book down!
