Customer Review: A very good purchase!
I bought this book a week ago and it’s hardly left my side since. I looked through so many Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy books in the shops, before I came across this one, that just had hundreds of pages of plain text with no illustrations or colour. That kind of book is fine if you’re an experienced Aromatherapist who just wants to quickly look something up for a patient etc. For home use I find that kind of book a little bit boring. BUT…this book is just perfect. It’s got all the information you could possibly want for home use and it is beautifully illustrated with everything from pictures of the plants and oils to how to give yourself and others a massage. There are facinating chapters on the history of Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy, home remedies, massage, the plants and oils, and loads more. The book covers 65 of the most popular and widely available oils. All nicely illustrated and described with added information such as safety data, aromatherapy use, extraction etc. I purchased this book along with it’s accompanying guide “The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Essential Oils”, also by Julia Lawless, which is equally as good as this one. But, if you only wanted to buy one book for general home use then I recommend this one. You can’t go wrong with this book. It’s a great read and it’s very well laid out for quick reference use. Definately a very valued addition to my book shelf.

Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy (Illustrated Guide)
For anybody who is unsure about the precise differences between the alternative healing arts, the Illustrated Guide series, printed by Element publishers, is a superb place to start. Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy: An Illustrated Guide details exactly how essential oils can be used to treat many illnesses and conditions, and is one of a series including books on Reflexology, Homeopathy, Flower Essences, Vitamins & Minerals, and Herbalism.

Like the companion editions, this book is superbly illustrated throughout with photographs and pictures, and presents information in an easily accessible and attractive way. In addition to the history of the art, how to practice it and how to prepare the oils, the book details the chemical components of essential oils, how to blend them and which carrier oils to use when. A series of sections on massage prepare you technically and the extensive listings of the different essences give you a great starting point if you are new to aromatherapy, or a great reference point if you are more experienced. A glossary of bodily symptoms, sections on visiting a practitioner and specific uses of aromatherapy, as well as a bibliography and list of useful addresses make this a great all-round reference. –Lucie Naylor

Customer Review: Highly Comprehensive
I was very pleasantly suprized with the wealth of information contained within these lovely pages! The price of this book is certainly no representation of the quality, as this is a highly comprehensive guide for the novice such as myself. Obviously the author is very competent in her field, as she has explained the use in history of each plant/oil aswell as it`s medicinal use both physically and psycologically. The illustrations are second to none - especially the step by step guide to aromatherapy in massage - and she demonstrates precisely how to make up the massage oil into safe quantities. Having read this book I feel fully confident in trying out her lotions, potions and using the oils for ailments and as a mood lifter on those down days!Would highly reccomend this book.

Customer Review: Working in Synergy
This book provides an extensive guide on the spiritual and psycological effects of Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy, but not only that. It proposes a merging of Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy with the oriental healing system based on the ying yang and elements theory. As a Feng Shui practicioner and a professional Aromathepist, I found this book deeply moving. As other books, It gives very helpful blending hints and recipes. The new aspect, though, talks about the oils's effects on the human Qi (energy). It effectivelly discusses the oil's main element (fire, water, earth, metal, wood), in relation to the emotional aspects that the elements spring in the psyche, and the specificaly related organ. Yes, the elements healing system part may seem basic for people that have workng with oriental medicine, but it is wonderfully explained for the newcomer. I feel this book has helped me to take my practice a bit further. I needed something more than the chemical aspects of the oils (I have several books on those), and this books was a wonderful answer to that.

Customer Review: Focuses on the brochure issues
I found this a difficult read. There was never anything to really get excited about and no new amazing insights. It simply repeated the accepted wisdom on Bach flowers. Her description of each flower remedy was a long discussion of the negative state given in the Bach Flower brochure. It’s her opinion that it is the separation from the higher self and not listening to your inner voice that causes this negative state.

For instance, when it comes to Chestnut Bud she focuses on the fact that they make repetitive mistakes. Chestnut Bud people have laser like focus, and can obsess on a tiny area of the universe. This makes them brilliant, but they miss many things outside of their field of interest, hence the mistakes. They are like the classic “absent minded professor”. They have extreme talent in one area, but very little common sense. Many people with Asperger’s will benefit from this remedy.

If you ask a Chestnut Bud if he makes repetitive mistakes, he will answer with an emphatic “No!” because if he makes a mistake in his area of focus, he learns from it, and does not make the same mistake twice. Where he makes repeated mistakes is outside his area of focus, which he doesn’t see, and often doesn’t care about. But if you ask him “Can you focus intensely on something you’re interested in, finding answers that no one else can think of?” He will answer, “Absolutely!” So yes, he makes repeated mistakes, but that’s not how you need to approach him. Instead focus on his intelligence and problem solving capabilities, and show him how to balance it.

She is very picky about how many drops to use, what kind of alcohol, and how to drink the water. They are flower remedies. They’re an energy medicine, one drop, four drops; ten drops, it doesn’t have to be so exact. Finding the right remedy is the important part, not how many drops.

When it comes to selecting the correct remedy she treats it like a homeopathic consultation, with a long interview process, and questionnaires that once again focus on the simplistic negative states given in the brochure. She off handedly dismisses any type of energy testing, saying that people new to Bach Flowers use this approach. I have used Bach Flower remedies for years, and I find energy testing to be quite important. Just because somebody has Asperger’s does not mean they need Chestnut Bud. Contrary to popular belief, a flower remedy can be wrong, and can stress a person.

Frequently energy testing will point to a remedy that I dismissed, and when I look at it more closely I think, “Oh, I hadn’t thought of it that way.” Energy testing has actually taught me more about the remedies because I’ve learned what types of people can benefit from certain remedies outside of the simple issues in the brochure. It’s fun to meet a client for the first time, with basically no knowledge of their personality, and be able to describe their most pressing issue. They say “Wow, how did you know that?” It also increases their faith in your ability to help them.

The focus on the negative aspects also felt over emphasized. Natural leaders will often test for Vine, which does not mean they are tyrants. It means they are natural leaders and it strengthens those qualities.

If you are seriously interested in the Bach Flowers, I recommend Advanced Bach Flower Therapy: A Scientific Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment.

Customer Review: Great reference tool!
This book truly is an “encyclopedia.”

This book is excellent. Whether like me you are a professional, or just someone who is interested in Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy. Its well written, easy to understand & has some very good recipes. Highly Recommended.
Customer Review: Very useful
Like many books on aromatherapy, this one does not attempt to do everything. It is not a general beginners’ book which spends much of its time telling you what an essential oil is and how to put them in the bath; it does not go into detail on massage or chemistry. The first 50 pages cover such topics briefly, but the bulk of the book is devoted to profiles of individual essential oils and recipes for blends. The essential oil profiles are usually two pages long each. They list the botanical name, family, location of the plant, extraction method, colour and odour of the oil, and description of the plant. There is a little more detail on the history of the plant and oil, precautions if relevant, and then the properties are listed (e.g. Clary sage: Tonic, sedative, hypotensive, anti-convulsant and euphoric). The really useful part is where the uses are described. They are divided into body systems, e.g. circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, nervous, muscular, emotion (to continue using the Clary sage entry), and then listed as follows: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM - Relaxes spasms in asthma due to anxiety or other emotional tension. REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM - Very useful for treating PMS and period pains. Can also be beneficial for infertility. This is followed by a list of blends for each system, which is particularly useful if you want to make a certain oil the focus of your blend e.g. MUSCULAR clary sage 5 rosemary 4 coriander 4 The last section of the book is devoted to recipes. There are sections on baths; general massage blends; face and bodycare; first-aid and holidays; pregnancy, mother and baby; blends for men; and then by ailment, again classified by body system e.g. circulatory disorders, skin disorders, emotional problems. Most ailments will have several different blends suggested, and the recipes are usually for three essential oils per blend (as is standard in aromatherapy). The 60 oils discussed are the standard repertoire for home use, and are recommended with due regard for safety. The dilutions are sensible and the recipes are practical. The vast number of recipes included, and the simplicity of each one, means that even if you only have a small number of oils, there are bound to be recipes somewhere which include them. There is a glossary of medical terms at the end, suggested further reading and a good index. This is a good general-purpose book for blending oils. It is nicely laid-out, very easy to follow, and excellent for cross-referencing. It will be useful to the beginner and the professional alike.

Was recommended this book by a friend. It's the most complete one I've seen! Very good for reference too. It's so easy to understand what can be mixed with what and how to use the oils and even extract the oils! I'm a beginner at all this but this is a great alround book! The only down side I would say is that I use another book to make sure that the plant I want is correct for there is no colour in the pictures. Hope this helps. Take care all!

Customer Review: Great read - great for reference
This is exactly what I have been looking for. It combines practical application with reasonable science while focusing on healing. In the back are several appendices listing the recommendations and summarizing the findings. Definitely worth the time and money.
Customer Review: Evidence-based aromatherapy, a valuable resource for nurses.
As a recently qualified nurse I have been brought up on evidence-based practice. Shirley Price certainly offers this with well-referenced texts, fully documented evidence, and examples of anecdotal evidence from informed practitioners. There is however, a reluctance to acknowledge the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary aproach to healing by an insistance that aromatherapy is sufficient in it’s own right without the need to incorporate skills related to nursing. This is understandable in a climate of complementary medicine having to justify it’s own existance in the world of modern medicine. There is detailed information on antiseptic/bacterial/viral qualities of oils. The paragraph on the use of essential oils with learning disabilities was disappointing - referring only to the oils which should not be used as opposed to what could be used for various cognitive actions. There was also little reference to aromathrapy for smell-memory, dementia, short-term memory integration and epilepsy management.

Practical Aromatherapy: How to Use Essential Oils to Restore Health and Vitality
List Price: ?6.99
Used Price: ?8.64
Customer Review: An excellent introduction to aromatherapy
Shirley Price is internationally known as a leading aromatherapist, and has here produced a book which covers a great deal of ground in a relatively short space. She gives a general introduction to aromatherapy and its background, profiles 47 essential oils individually as well as providing a therapeutic index and some very sensible recipes for the commoner ailments, and provides a selection of case histories, both Price’s own and from her colleagues. The oil profiles and charts are clearly laid out and simple to follow; they are concise but still go into quite a bit of detail. Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy techniques, such as blending oils or using them in the bath, are explained well, and at all times her suggested practices and essential oil dilutions are practical and safe. Massage techniques (effleurage, p?trissage and frictions) are clearly explained and a whole-body massage sequence suggested, with good illustrations. There are also chapters on skin care and some other disciplines, namely reflexology and shiatsu. Again background and techniques are given a basic but thorough discussion, and routines given for those who wish to incorporate these other complementary therapies into their aromatherapy treatments. This was the first book I bought on aromatherapy and it kept me going for a long time. While those who go on to study aromatherapy seriously will, sooner or later, want books that discuss its various aspects in more depth, for an all-round introduction to the subject that will give you a good working amateur knowledge, this book is a great place to start.
Customer Review: Packed with information and recipes
I have several books on aromatherapy but found none as useful as this. It was my very first and I still use it more often than any of the more expensive books. It has very easy to follow charts showing compatability of oils to each other and to a particular ailment. I have tried many of the suggested recipes with great results - the oils for backache are extremely effective. Well worth the nominal amount asked for this book.

Customer Review: A must-have for student & qualified aromatherapists.
An excellent in-depth book on how emotions affect our lives and the essential oils that can be used to deal with negative emotions eg. fear, grief etc. It also explains about the effects of positive thinking & how we can help ourselves through using this. The process of smell is explained & the importance of aromas in the effects they have on our memory & emotions.Included in the book are case studies which illustrate & enhance the text & enable the reader to see how the author’s ideas/treatments are put into practice. An extremely interesting book - a different approach to aromatherapy rather than lists of physical symptoms, & a much more comprhensive look at our emotions - I could not put this book down! As a student aromatherapist I believe this should be required reading, & can only increase the holistic basis to our treatments. Another winner by Shirley Price!

Customer Review: Good oil summary book
I have only recently been introduced to this book and for its price it is excellent. It gives useful overviews of most of the commonly used essential oils but it is most useful if you want an easy introduction to the chemistry behind them. In conjunction with the Caddy Blending Calculator (CD) this can greatly assist in the understanding of synergistic blending.
Customer Review: Don’t leave home without it.
This is an excellent book for students and qualified aromatherapists. Very handy and easy to understand. The lay out is great and very colourful making it “idiot-proof” when chosing aromatherapy blends. I keep a copy of this in my bag when I see clients just in case I want to double check something. In fact, it was that good, that I bought a second copy to keep in the office as well for those unexpected phone calls!

Customer Review: An Amazing Book
Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy an A-Z is a first class book. I have used it as a health ‘bible’/encyclopedia (along with a wonderful herb book ~ The New Holistic Herbal by David Hoffmann) for the last 13 years and refer to it constantly. Almost (!) all the information you could ever need on all aspects of aromatherapy from treatment and prevention of specific illnesses, history of plant use & methods of oil extaction, to cosmetic use (including recipes for cosmetic products), all in an easy to use A-Z ‘dictionary’ format. Includes information on related practices such as Yoga and Reflexology etc Everyone interested in their own health should own a copy of this insightful and indespensible book. ** N.B. I highly recommend buying this edition rather than the 2005 edition published by Vermillion ~ it contains exactly the same information word for word, but is of a much higher quality in terms of the materials used (paper printing etc). Enjoy!
Customer Review: Recommended A Comprehensive Reference
There are so many books on aromatherapy on the market and many of them are interesting, but of all the books I have read or bought on the subject I find this one the most reliable and well used. I can usually find what I am looking for and unlike some books you have both recommended oils for common ailments and details of many essential oils including some of the more unusual ones.

Tranquil Tide Machine

Tranquil Tide Machine
Soothe away stress with rhythm, sound and perpetually rolling waves.

  • Translucent liquid gently rocks back and forth
  • Replicates motion of ocean waves
  • Wave sounds can be turned on or off
  • Stress relief at home or office
  • Relaxing at bedtime

Let the gentle, rhythmic wave motion ease tension and encourage you to relax. For a multi-sensory experience, add the natural sound of waves, which further soothes away stress.

Customer Review: cool and interesting, yes; relaxing? definitely not
This thing is pretty nifty and fun to watch, and I have a pretty place for it in my apartment, but don’t purchase this expecting it to ever “sooth” you. It moves too quickly left to right, and the motor noise (as others have mentioned) is a bit too loud for my liking.

The wave sound effects, which you can turn off, are absolutely horrible and cheap sounding. I really enjoy this for what it is, but don’t expect the world from this product.

Customer Review: Cheap
This is a poor attempt at soothing anyone with a wave hypnotic motion. My son (age 9), who really wanted it for Christmas said, ” I thought it would be real water”. The sound is ridiculous and without it the motor for the machine deletes any soothing from the motion of the water/oil prepartion that makes the wave. Nice idea, poor product.

Shirley Price’s Aromatherapy Workbook: Understanding Essential Oils - From Plant to Bottle

Customer Review: Thorough and informative
I read this book from cover to cover. It’s an informative piece of work from one of the grandma’s (no offence, Shirley!) of aromatherapy. Particularly liked the chemistry section as it was well explained. Shirley Price has a wealth of experience, which she draws upon 99% of the time. This kind of writing has worth, but my only criticism (hence 4 stars instead of 5) is that, because of this, the book does tend to lack references to clinical trials; something which we need more of in aromatherapy.

Customer Review: Imagine What A Clean Hippie Would Smell Like…
I was instructed to not snoop around the house this year for my Christmas gifts. I couldn’t even look inside my stocking, “For God’s sake, John, you’re almost 42 years old…stop acting like a little kid…” I can’t help it. Oh, sure I probably could help it, it’s just that I didn’t want to. The holidays excite me, enthuse me, they bring out the little kid in me just like this soap does…

Huh? How in the heck did he make that leap?

I was born in 1965. I grew up around the Hippie Movement. In fact, my father was a Beatnik and my mother was a Hippie, so I guess that makes me a Beepie…or a Heatnik…I like Beepie better…but I always noticed this strange odor coming from my aunt. I asked my dad about it and he just said it was because she was allergic to bathing.

How horrible I thought? Imagine being allergic to water! Hey, wait a minute…she was at last year’s pool party and she was in the pool. Come to think of it, there was a brown ring around her the whole time and the next day my dad emptied the pool and we never had a pool party again.

But despite her musky scent - that’s being kind to musks - once in awhile she did have this other scent coming from her that actually smelled kind of nice. Patchouli. It’s actually a very pretty scent, but too much of it can be overpowering and all too often, hippies would wear this instead of bathing. Kind of like putting Carpet Fresh on top of the cat litter instead of just emptying out the stuff and starting over.

But back to our Christmas story, something was in the air on Christmas Eve. Not, not the freshly burned slice and bake cookies my wife was making, not the little “ornaments” my dog was busy making in the backyard, something hauntingly familiar….PATCHOULLI…I looked all around. Under the couch, under the bed, under my wife…then I realized it was coming from my stocking. I pulled out a bar of Patchouli soap. Nice. Clean. Not overpowering. I put it aside and noticed the other goodies only to sense another presence in the room.

“Ahem…”

Dang. Almost made it this year.

Peace & Blessings, people…may your make this year your “cleanest one” yet!

Customer Review: Really good beginners guide
I got this as one of my first aromatherapy books, its a really useful beginners guide. There is a section that details each oil, its physical and “emotional” properties which also includes (very importantly) notes of caution where necessary. The book is well presented, easy to read and use as a reference.
Customer Review: Aromatherapy‘>Aromatherapy make easy and fun!
I was looking for a book that gave a rough but imformative guide to aromatherapy and it certainly delivered. It’s great for a beginer (like me) but it’s also a great reference guide for the more experienced. The infomation is well writen, to the point but also very informative. it includes all the main branches of aromatherapy, to give the reader a well rouned view of the whole subject. This book is also fun to read as it’s colouurful! i really didn’t want to buy a book full of writing and no pictures, as i knew i was more likely to put it down. but i read this book in two days and have learnt so much. A bad point is that it assumes the reader is a bit dim in the explanations of things (although that’s probably because i am a science sudent) Overall i think it’s a great book and well worth buying.
